If you want to run away it’s often a sign that something isn’t as it should be, or that you need some help and support. You may have had enough of a situation or feel that you need some space away from everything. Or sometimes there may be something going on in your life that makes you feel you have no other option but to leave.
We can all feel like we need a break from time to time but if you’re seriously considering leaving it’s very important to think about your options and how to stay safe as running away or leaving home can be very dangerous.
On most (but not all) occasions, running away will not solve the issues you are facing, and they may still be there if you go back. Trying to address and solve the problems instead of running away may be a more long-term solution. If you are not sure and are questioning whether running away is the right thing to do, then it’s probably not what’s best at this time.
If you have time, it might be a good idea to talk to someone about how you’re feeling and what’s going on for you. This may be a friend, an adult you trust, or a confidential organisation that’s there to listen and support you like the Runaway Helpline. You can speak with us anonymously by calling or texting us for free on 116000, or chat with us every day between 2.30-9.30pm. Talking can sometimes make it easier to deal with a problem or may help you identify some options you didn’t realise were there.
If you don’t have time or you feel you need to leave as soon as possible, it’s a good idea to seek some practical help. If you’re in immediate danger you should contact the emergency services on 999 straight away. If you feel unsafe where you live, or as though you may come to harm if you don’t leave, a good start may be to speak with someone like the police or social services. These can feel like big steps, but they have a responsibility to keep you safe.
If this feels daunting, we can support you to do this. At Runaway Helpline we will always listen, and we will never judge. We want to help you stay safe and get the right help – the right help for you – no matter what your situation is. If you want, we can help you by sending a message for you or by supporting you on a three way call. Call or text us for free on 116 000.
