Once you are 18 you can leave home without permission from your parents or guardian. Some people want to leave home before that – and if you are 16 or 17 you need to have your parent’s consent to do this. The reality is that if someone of that age leaves they are unlikely to be forced back home unless they are in danger.

If you are planning to leave home some things to consider are what kind of place you want to stay in, how much it will cost and whether you can afford it. It can be difficult to get and maintain a tenancy so it is worth getting some advice and planning.

Sometimes you need to leave quickly – so it is worth looking at what services are available for young people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless.
